Wine for a party of 50

How many bottles do you need, and which wines keep everyone happy without blowing the budget? A simple calculation and our tips.

How many bottles?

Count on about half a bottle per person for a party of four to five hours. For 50 guests that is 25 to 30 bottles of wine. If you serve bubbles on arrival, allow one glass per person: at six glasses per bottle that is 8 to 9 bottles.

And for a reception or wedding?

For a two-hour reception, count on two to three glasses per person. For a wedding with dinner and dancing, three quarters of a bottle per person is a safe basis. Don't forget water: at least half a litre per guest.

Red, white or bubbles?

A good split is 40% red, 40% white and 20% sparkling. For a summer party or a fish buffet take more white and rosé, for a winter dinner more red.

Choose easy-drinking wines

At a party people drink while they talk. Choose supple, fruity wines everyone enjoys, and keep one special bottle for the toast. Magnums are ideal: they keep better and look great on the table.

Full cases back

Better to order a little too much than too little: for events we take back full, unopened cases. You never run dry and you don't pay for what is left.
