Tasting wine: what do your nose and taste buds do?
Tasting is no secret language. With three simple steps you get more out of every glass.
Look
Tilt the glass against a white background. The colour tells you about the grape, the age and the concentration: young red is purplish, older wine turns brick red.
Smell
Swirling releases the aromas. Most of what we call taste we actually smell with our nose: fruit, flowers, spices, wood.
Taste
On the tongue we taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. In wine we look at acidity, which gives freshness, tannins, which feel dry and grippy, alcohol and the finish: how long does the flavour last?
Taste together
The best way to learn is to compare: two wines side by side tell you more than ten descriptions. Come and taste at our events or on Thursdays in the shop.
